APA – Lagos (Nigeria) The Nigerian Government will in conjunction with the United States and France address the security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea during the 2023 Lagos International Maritime Week.
The organizers of the International Maritime Week, Zoe Maritime Resources Limited, said in a statement that port development, transportation, law and arbitration, training and education as well as environment and women in maritime would be discussed at the event.
It added that the LIMWEEK will be a week of activities, showcasing the best of the maritime industry and that it will include the 8th International Maritime Business to Business Conference scheduled to take place on September 19, 2023.
According to the statement, the conference’s theme, which is ‘MARPOL at 50 – Pollution from Ships, Africa’s Commitment to Clean Oceans, Seas, Inland Waters and the Marine Environment’ will give stakeholders and experts the opportunity to address maritime challenges in Africa.
The report by Punch newspaper on Thursday said that the convener of the programme, Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore stated after 50 years of its legislative existence, it was essential to see how Nigeria and Africa have followed through with this global commitment to keep the marine environment clean and safe from pollution from ships.
Other issues to be addressed, according to Edodo-Emore, include the disposal of wastewater and its effects on the logistics value chain, insurance of oil tankers, and risk management strategies for preventing pollution and tax responsibilities of international shipping companies.
The statement added that the conference will have in attendance, the Minister of Marine and the Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; the Executive Secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission, José Abeso and the immediate past Executive Secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission based in Angola, Adenike Ukonga.
