Nigerians have congratulated Afro-fusion superstar, Burna Boy, and Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun, who emerged winners of Grammy on Sunday in the 63rd annual Grammy Awards.
Burna Boy won for his album ‘Twice As Tall’ and while Wizkid made it with “Brown Skin Girl”, which he featured in.
Local media reports on Monday said that Burna Boy, who won his first-ever Grammy for the Best World Music Album, beat other strong contenders, Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Tinariwen to get him the top spot, while the song “Brown Skin Girl” which Beyonce featured Wizkid Balogun won the award for Best Music Video in the 63rd annual Grammy Awards.
The album, which is Burna boy’s fifth studio album, was released in August 2020.
According to the reports, it is the second Grammy nomination for the Nigerian singer, who has sold out London’s Wembley arena and broken a UK music chart and a Spotify streaming records with his Afrobeat and dancehall style.
Burna Boy clinched his first nomination in 2019 in the same category, for his “African Giant” album.
Many Nigerians, especially the fans of Burna boy, have twitted that the Grammy has shown that Burna Boy is a legend and one of the greatest of all times.
Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun also won his first Grammy Award for his collaboration with Beyoncé and Blue Ivy on the song “Brown Skin Girl”.
The music video for “Brown Skin Girl” was featured in Beyoncé’s 2020 film Black Is King and was released separately on August 24, 2020. Directed by Beyoncé and Jenn Nkiru, the video acts as a celebration and affirmation of the beauty of dark-skinned women.
The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, video director, and video producer, according to the official Grammy website.
The song ‘Brown Skin Girl’ comes off the 2019 album, ‘The Lion King’.
This win, which also marks the first Grammy Award for Beyoncé’s daughter, will be shared with Jenn Nkiru who directed the video.
