APA-Niamey (Niger) – The United States contingent in Niger numbers more than 1,000 soldiers.
On the initiative of civil society movements, hundreds of people demonstrated on Sunday in Agadez, in the north of Niger, to protest against the presence of US military bases in the country.
The demonstrators shouted slogans hostile to the presence of foreign troops on Nigerien soil.
This rally is not the first of its kind this week in Niger. On 13 April, thousands of people marched in Niamey to demand the immediate departure of US troops. Members of the ruling junta took part in the rally.
The United States recently agreed to withdraw its 1,100-strong military contingent from the West African country.
The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) denounced Niamey’s military agreements with Washington, deploring the lack of transparency surrounding the presence of US troops in Niger.
The new authorities following the coup of 26 July 2023 against Mohamed Bazoum had already terminated the military agreements with France, which led to the departure of French soldiers from the country.
