Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has condemned the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump at the weekend, saying Monday that such acts of violence are a threat to democratic principles and global peace.
Trump was the target of an assassination attempt on July 13 at a Pennsylvania rally, days before he was to accept the Republican nomination for a third time.
He was shot on the ear and whisked off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after gunshots rang through the crowd.
In a message to US President Joe Biden on Monday, Nyusi wished Trump a speedy recovery and saluted US law enforcement agents for the “prompt measures taken to avoid the worst” in the wake of the incident.
“Violence in any form cannot and must not be tolerated. Attacks on the lives of any individual, especially political leaders, represent a serious threat to democratic principles and social peace,” the message read.
Trump’s campaign announced Monday that the former president was doing “fine” after the shooting, which he said pierced the upper part of his right ear.
The shooter was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who was fatally shot by secret service operatives.
