Early Thursday evening, Chad’s national electoral body announced the provisional results of the 6 May presidential election, which marked the end of a three-year transition following the death of Marshal Idriss Déby Itno in an army counter-offensive in the north against a rebel movement.
General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno was declared the winner of the first round with 61.03 percent of the vote against 18.53 percent for his main rival, Succes Masra.
The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) took note of the publication of these provisional results and expressed its wish that all parties avoid violence and maintain a climate of calm through dialogue and consultation, while calling for recourse to legal channels in the event of disputes.
Shortly before the official announcement of the results, Masra claimed victory in the first round and accused the Deby camp of manipulating the results.
Final results will be announced by the constitutional council.
