Flooding from heavy rainfall claimed one life and led to the evacuation of 200 people from Umlazi, Umdoliti and Verulam districts of South Africa’s Indian Ocean port city of Durban on Sunday, a senior official has said.
“One person drowned and we have evacuated over 200 people since last night,” eThekwini Municipality deputy city manager Musa Gumede said.
After a weekend of heavy rains, video footage emerged showing a building complex in Umdloti (north of Durban) being washed away as a result of the floods.
Heavy rainfall and mudslides have led to the ground collapsing around and under the buildings, Gumede said.
The latest KwaZulu-Natal floods, however, are much less than what “we saw a month ago when we evacuated over 10,000 people within two days,” Gumede said.
Last month’s deadly floods in KwaZulu-Natal claimed over 400 lives in and around the province.
