Nigeria’s Channels Television reports that about 28 people were injured on Tuesday when soldiers shot at #EndSARS protesters in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this in a series of tweets on Wednesday, was silent on the number of fatalities.
He made the disclosure shortly after he visited the victims who sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds as a result of the action of the soldiers.
Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the injured victims were receiving medical treatment across three hospitals in the state.
According to him, 10 victims are being treated at the General Hospital, 11 at Reddington, and four hospitalised at Vedic medical facility.
The governor confirmed that the victims sustained mild to moderate levels of injuries, but two were receiving intensive medical care.
The television station also says that American Politician, Hillary Clinton, has called on the Nigerian Government to stop killing #EndSARS protesters.
Clinton made the call in a tweet on Tuesday, in reaction to the shooting by officers of the Nigerian Army that occurred in the Lekki Toll Gate Area of the Lagos State killings.
“I’m calling on @mbuhari and the @hqnigerianarmy to stop killing young#EndSARS protesters. #StopNigerianGovernment,” she wrote.
The Punch reports that Azman Air, Air Peace, and Arik Air have all cancelled flights for its Lagos bound passengers, due to the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The three airlines made the announcement on Tuesday in separate press releases. Azman airline made this announcement via its official Twitter handle on Tuesday.
The tweet read, “This is to inform all our Lagos bound passengers that all flights are hereby cancelled till further notice “This is due to the directive issued by Lagos State Government to impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of Lagos starting from 4pm today.
“We deeply regret all Inconveniencies.” Air Peace in its flight advisory on Tuesday also included cancelled flights from Benin, noting that it would not operate flights from Lagos and Benin till further notice.
The statement read, “This is to inform the general public that due to the newly imposed curfew in Lagos and Benin, we shall not be operating flights from these two locations till further notice.”
The newspaper says that NESBITT Investment Nigeria Limited has acquired Peugeot Automobile Nigeria with a promise to inject $150m into the company in the next three years to revamp the automobile firm.
The new investor said the fund would be spent on retooling and upgrading the automobile company’s assembly line as well as in supporting infrastructure and working capital.
Speaking while taking over the firm at the PAN Assembly plant in Kaduna on Monday, the new Chairman, Ahmed Wadada-Aliyu, assured that the company would soon be rolling out cheap and affordable brand new vehicles for Nigerians.
Wadada-Aliyu lamented that in 2019 alone, Nigeria imported not less than 400,000 used cars as against 68,000 imported brand new vehicles.
He said PAN Nigeria would be introducing new brands of vehicles into the market to re-launch brand affordability in the country such that Nigerians would have access to brand new vehicles.
ThisDay reports that many protesters were feared dead last night as soldiers deployed by the federal government stormed Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, where thousands of demonstrators had held their ground for 13 days in protest of police brutality.
A deep sense of outrage greeted the deployment of the soldiers who came as a sequel to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who said he was shocked at the turn of events as the peaceful protests became infiltrated by hoodlums that torched a divisional police headquarter and a local government secretariat in the state.
Former US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hilary Clinton; former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili; an international artist, Gabrielle Union; Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took the lead in censoring the armed deployment, saying it was overkill against peaceful protesters demanding a stoppage to police abuse of their rights.
Sanwo-Olu had by 12 pm announced a 24-hour curfew that was to begin at 4 pm but was afterwards extended to 9 pm. Hours after the announcement, staff of Lekki Concession Company (LCC), was seen on tape removing all the CCTV mounted on the tolls.
The Sun reports that the Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (Lekki Port), the developer of the Lekki Deep Sea Port currently under construction at the Lagos Free Zone, Ibeju Lekki, has commenced construction of the 680meter long quay wall with the driving of the first pile.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the project site, the Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Port, Mr Ruogang Du, said that the commencement of piling of quay wall, which is a major phase of the construction, symbolises a significant step towards the timely delivery of the project.
He said despite the setback occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic, both the investors and the contractors have demonstrated admirable commitment to deliver the project as and when due, with construction now at full steam.
“Thank you very much for coming today to witness this solid step in delivering the Lekki Port. As we all know, the epidemic has harmed global economic development and personnel mobility everywhere.
However, developers and investors in Lekki Port have not stopped moving forward. We are actively resuming construction and are striving to fulfil our commitment to officially open the port for operations in the first half of 2023.
