While some have commended the government’s efforts, others have called for further action and greater engagement with market actors.
Hicham El Zein, Manager of Confidence Trading Company (CTC), a leading importer of rice, commended the government’s efforts to stabilize the exchange rate, acknowledging its positive impact on the wholesale price of rice. He acknowledged that the exchange rate stability has created a more predictable market environment, which is crucial for businesses like CTC.
However, El Zein emphasized the need for further government intervention to enhance the competitiveness of locally produced rice. He stressed that reducing the cost of locally produced rice is crucial to encourage greater consumption and support local farmers. “While the government’s efforts to reduce the wholesale price of imported rice are commendable,” said El Zein, “we believe that greater emphasis should be placed on supporting local rice production and making it more affordable for consumers.”
Echoing similar concerns, Haja Marie Bob Kandeh, President of the Market Women’s Association, called for greater clarity and transparency in rice pricing. She pointed out that significant variations exist in the prices of different rice brands and qualities, causing confusion among consumers.
Kandeh urged the government to consider all relevant factors, including labor costs, transportation costs, and rental expenses, when determining retail prices. She also emphasized the importance of ongoing engagement with market stakeholders, including market women, to ensure that the new pricing measures effectively benefit consumers.
“We understand the government’s efforts to address the rising cost of living,” said Kandeh. “However, it is crucial to ensure that these measures are implemented in a fair and equitable manner, and that the benefits reach all segments of the population.”
The views expressed by CTC and the Market Women’s Association highlight the need for continued dialogue and collaboration between the government and key stakeholders in the private sector. By working together, the government can effectively address the challenges of food security and ensure that the benefits of these initiatives reach all segments of the population.
