Some 20 individuals armed with hunting rifles attacked the Riu Baobab hotel in Pointe Sarene, located about 100 kilometers south of Dakar, taking away over 12 million CFA francs (around €18,300), the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) reports.
According to a source close to the establishment quoted by the APS, the criminals stormed a luxury hotel complex in the Petite-Cote, inaugurated in 2022 in the district of Mbour, on the night of Saturday to Sunday.
After seizing the money that was at the reception, they tried to flee aboard a hotel bus.
An exchange of fire ensued at the exit of the facility between the attackers and the police, forcing the criminals to retreat inside the hotel where they took refuge.
Despite the intervention of the police who sealed off the hotel compound, the attackers managed to escape by cutting a hole through the barbed wire of the hotel, and disappeared into the forest, the same source explains.
“There were no injuries or arrests,” the APS indicates, adding that an investigation has been opened into the case.
