Some 60, 000 students in Rwanda have failed in their exams, prompting the country’s education authorities to recommend them retaking the examinations, APA learnt on Wednesday.
A Rwandan government statement said more than 60,000 students would re-sit this school year thanks to abysmally low exams grades.
It said this figure includes the over 44,000 pupils who took their primary school leaving exams while the rest were secondary school leavers.
Education minister Valentine Uwamariya said after being traced with the help of their respective schools the students in question would be put through “a special programme to help them improve, in collaboration with the Rwanda Education Board, districts and schools”.
Rwanda changed part of its automatic student/pupil promotion policy last year in a bid to improve performance in its schools.
However, the decision to put students and pupils on repeat has caused consternation in some quarters with critics placing the blame for the mass exam flops on the education authorities given the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic of the past two years.
