Rwandan health authorities on Wednesday confirmed the detection of the first six case of the Omicron variants of the coronavirus, a few week after the country expanded travel restrictions in an attempt to slow its spread.
For the last 4 weeks Rwanda has seen the rise of COVID-19 new cases.
Rwanda becomes the second East African country to record the variant after Uganda.
“Through the genomic sequencing of samples collected from travelers and their contacts, the ministry of health has confirmed six cases of Omicron variant in Rwanda,” reads the statement in part.
The statement also revealed that the new measures announced by the cabinet are intended to mitigate the spread of Omicron, which is said to be highly contagious.
