The top Rwandan diplomat was apparently reacting to some reports by Ugandan media suggesting that Rwanda closed its border to goods from its neighbour to the north, Uganda, a few weeks ago.
“But the real questions are when people are held incommunicado and tortured in another country with no charges or disappear with no explanation, isn’t the border closed for them, their families and their country?” the Rwandan official tweeted.
Ugandan media last week reported that the row between the two countries all started like a small matter, with Rwanda claiming that there were major construction works going on at its Gatuna border post that could not allow the processing of trucks from Uganda to enter the country.
The truckers, though, had not received advance warning that the border post would be closed.
Rwanda advised that trucks from Uganda could instead enter the country using another border post in Mirama Hills, about 110kms from Gatuna.
The reaction by the Rwandan official comes a week after Kigali released a list of more than 800 Rwandese nationals currently detained “arbitrarily” by Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence(CMI).
