APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – French national Gerard Buschier has been named to take charge of Amavubi as caretaker coach ahead of their final AFCON qualifier against Senegal at Huye Stadium on September 9, Sports sources confirmed Thursday to APA in Kigali.
Buschier, who currently serves as Rwanda’s football governing body (FERWAFA) Technical Director since his appointment on September 15, 2022, will be assisted by Amavubi legend Jimmy Mulisa and Innocent Seninga who is without a club since he was relieved of his duties as Sunrise FC head coach since the end of the 2022/23 season.
Buschier’s appointment as national team caretaker comes after the departure of outgoing coach Carlos Alos Ferrer who left the position in July to coach the Belarusian national team.
And, considering the short time available for preparations, the FA’s executive committee decided to assign the three men to take charge for the only match before a substantive gaffer is named ahead of the world cup qualifiers which begins in November.
Rwanda has no chance of making it to the AFCON finals in Côte D’Ivoire in January 2024 as they sit bottom of Group L with just two points but the final game against the African champions will offer them the coaches a chance to test some new players ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
Rwanda was supposed to host the Lions of Teranga on June 7, at Huye Stadium but an inspection report from CAF officials indicated that the venue proved not ready yet to host the June qualifying fixtures.
After the stadium has been upgraded to international standards as per CAF requirements, an agreement has been reached between both Rwanda and Senegal football bodies that the latter travel to Huye (Rwanda) to play the return leg on 9 September.
