Rwanda has embarked on the construction of the first ever largest ceramic glazed tiles manufacturing plant in Nyanza, a district at about 100 Km from Kigali in the South, a senior local administrative official in the region confirmed Friday to APA in Kigali.
The Mayor of Nyanza district, Erasme Ntazinda explained that the project which is expected to cost 29 million dollars will allow the construction of a plant designed to manufacture 36.000 sq.m. of ceramic tiles per day.
“In the first phase of production, 9,000 square meters of tiles will be produced daily and this will be doubled in the second phase targeting both the domestic and regional market,” Ntazinda said.
According to him, the new plant’s production capacity will cover the needs at the national level and considerably reduce the imports of tiles.
Official estimates show that all ceramic tiles in Rwanda are imported, yet similar studies show the country has some of the best ceramic clays in the world.
It is expected that the new plant will directly employ more than 100 people and create business opportunities for local residents in Southern Rwanda.
