The Volkswagen Group is looking to push for zero-emissions vehicles to combat its pollution issues, with the launching of the first-ever electric vehicles to be unveiled Tuesday in the Rwandan capital Kigali.
At the occasion, four cars will be unveiled along with one charging station at the Volkswagen facility at the Special Economic Zone, located in Masoro a suburb of Kigali city, an official source confirmed to APA in Kigali.
It is expected that more cars will join the market in the coming months to bring the number to about 20 cars and 15 charging stations across the city, the management of the company said.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)of Volkswagen’s operations in Rwanda, Michaella Rugwizangoga, the new cars of Golf Model which have been introduced to market in a joint collaboration between Volkswagen and Siemens under a pilot project Golf Model are fully electric.
The pilot project will involve data collection and analysis on aspects such as performance of the electric cars, reception by consumers, consumer trends and suitable conditions for the cars.
With the introduction of the new cars, Rwanda is looking to be the leader in penetration of electric vehicles on the African continent, it said.
