APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South African philanthropist Johann Rupert has donated 10,000 homes to the country’s needy persons, his foundation has announced.
Rupert, who made his US$11.8 billion fortune in the mining industry, the donated the homes to the underprivileged alongside the land’s title deeds, his Free Market Foundation said on Friday.
The billionaire and wife Gaynor Rupert formed the Free Market Foundation in partnership with First National Bank to launch the initiative to give title deeds back to people who were disadvantaged by apartheid, the foundation said.
“And in so doing they hope to spread and create wealth within underprivileged communities,” the foundation’s chief executive David Ansara said.
Rupert is said to be South Africa’s richest man, according to Statistics South Africa.
