APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South African police have arrested a Johannesburg man for allegedly operating an illegal drug laboratory at a lodge in Johannesburg, APA learnt here on Sunday.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said members of the organised crime investigation unit raided the drug lab after receiving a tip-off.
“The members swiftly acted on the tip-off and upon arrival at the said place, two rooms were searched leading to the discovery of suspected cocaine rocks, crystal-meth, ecstasy tablets, chemicals and laboratory apparatus,” Nevhuhulwi said.
The drugs were valued at more than US$17,000.
During the search, it was further established that the man, who was the lodge manager, was the only one with access to the two specific rooms, Nevhuhulwi said.
“He was arrested and charged with illegal manufacturing and dealing in drugs,” he said.
SAPS police commissioner Elias Mawela applauded the officers for removing drugs from the country’s streets.
“We remain resolute in the fight against the scourge of drug abuse and we will continue ensuring that those who deal in drugs are identified and brought to book,” Mawela said.
