There were 212 new Covid-19 cases on Monday in South Africa, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3,992,661 since the pandemic broke out in the country in March two years ago, the health ministry announced on Tuesday.
The majority of the new cases were from Gauteng province at 43%, followed by the Western Cape at 19%, the ministry said.
KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 18%; Mpumalanga accounted for 6%, and North West accounted for 5%, it said.
And the Eastern Cape accounted for 4%; Northern Cape accounted for 3%; Limpopo accounted for 2%, and Free State accounted for no cases at all, the ministry added.
Nine hospital admissions were recorded by Monday evening, ministry records showed.
Nine deaths were also reported, bringing total fatalities to 101,740 to date this year, according to the ministry.
Meanwhile, South Africa has administered a total number of 36,780,463 vaccines to date using Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines to fortify its population from the pandemic, the ministry said.
