APA-Dakar (Senegal) – Over the last few years, Senegal has witnessed a spike in the broadcasting of skits during the month of Ramadan.
Senegal’s National Council for Audiovisual Regulation (CNRA) has called on the media to exercise greater vigilance in the choice of programmes to be broadcast during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement seen by APA, CNRA drew attention to its strict guidelines on the type of audiovisual content to be broadcast during this important period for the Muslim faithful.
The regulator strongly reiterated the categorical ban on broadcasting content that could undermine national stability and social cohesion. The warning also stresses the importance of respecting religious beliefs and avoiding any form of ridicule of religion, beliefs or practices.
The CNRA also warned against any media content likely to provoke confrontation between the different religions, fraternities or communities that make up Senegal’s social fabric.
In the context of the forthcoming elections, the regulator has specifically warned against the misuse of Ramadan skits and specials for political ends.
The CNRA insisted on the need for the media to comply strictly with the regulations in force, which prohibit any political propaganda or attacks on rival candidates or political parties.
In this sense, the regulator appealed to the Senegalese media’s sense of responsibility, urging them to give priority to the production and broadcasting of content that complies with ethical, moral and legal principles.
