President Bassirou Diomaye Faye received a delegation from British Petroleum (BP) led by its Executive Vice President on Tuesday. The delegation informed the President of the commencement of gas production at the Grand Tortue/Ahmeyin (GTA) field, a significant milestone in the joint energy venture between Senegal and Mauritania.
The GTA natural gas field, discovered in 2015, holds an estimated 20 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas. The project is being developed by a consortium led by BP, with Kosmos Energy and Senegal’s national oil company, PETROSEN, as partners.
The first phase of the GTA project, which commenced operations as planned in 2024, has an initial production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. Additionally, 35 million cubic feet of natural gas per day will be supplied for domestic consumption, primarily for electricity generation.
The project infrastructure includes an LNG terminal hub located 10 kilometers offshore and a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel situated 35 kilometers off the coast.
This development marks a significant milestone for Senegal’s energy sector, opening new avenues for economic growth and development.
