Kroo Bay is one of about a dozen slum communities dotted around Freetown and which are highly over populated.
These communities have become the symbol of the overcrowding of the Sierra Leonean capital. And they have proven to be highly prone to disasters like fire outbreaks, which are very common during the dry season.
Almost every year there have been reports of fire outbreak in these communities, particularly Kroo Bay. And during the rains, flooding is common.
These communities are also usually among the hardest hit during infectious diseases outbreak.
Several attempts to relocate the communities have failed, a situation blamed on political expediency.
