the self-declared republic of Somaliland has described Somalia’s decision to offer a port and an airbase to the United States on its territory was unacceptable.
Somalia recently wrote to Washington proposing giving to the US control of a port and airbase in Berbera which is located in Somaliland’s Gulf of Aden northern coast.
The Somaliland foreign affairs minister said Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has no legal right to offer any part of its territory to the United States which also include three other facilities located inside Somalia.
Abdirahman Dahir Aden said Mohamud’s proposal to Trump was a “desperate” bid to curry favours form Washington.
Reacting on X to Mohamud’s letter, the Somaliland FM said there was nothing that could stop US recognition of Somaliland as an independent country.
The leadership in Hargeisa remains hopeful that the signals coming from the Trump White House would lead to recognition of its total independence from Somalia which regards the enclave as part of its territory.
Somaliland has never been recognised internationally as an independent nation but has been self-governed with its own currency, parliament and executive since 1991.
