Popular South African singer and actress Winnie Khumalo passed away on Tuesday at the age of 51 after a short illness, her family announced.
According to her sister Tshepi Akeepile on Wednesday, Khumalo died on her way to the hospital.
While the exact cause of her illness remains unclear, she had been hospitalised in November 2024 due to shortness of breath, which was later diagnosed as an asthmatic attack.
Khumalo’s illustrious career began in the 1980s when, as a teenager, she sang backing vocals for the legendary Brenda Fassie.
Known for her energetic performances, Khumalo released several albums throughout her career and became best known for her hit song “Live My Life.”
She collaborated with numerous prominent South African artists, including the late Fassie.
In addition to her music career, Khumalo made her mark on South African television, appearing in popular series such as “Muvhango.”
Her contributions to both the music and television industries have left an indelible mark on South African culture.
