South Africans and other nationals have been urged to be counted for this year’s Census 2022, which is underway nationwide, Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Thembi Siweya, has said in Pretoria.
With some 165,000 officials spread throughout the country for the census, Siweya urged everyone within the borders of the country to cooperate with the field workers of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) sent out to count them.
A census is held once every 10 years in South Africa, and Stats SA said this was the first census to be conducted both online and using face-to-face enumeration.
Siweya urged everyone to participate in the Census 2022, saying the data would assist government to plan for the future.
“As government, we are interested in the data as it is going to assist us in planning. We are encouraging everyone to participate in the census and get counted,” Siweya said during a webinar organised by the Government Communications Information Services with the National Press Club on Thursday.
“We encourage our people to cooperate with the field workers, be honest, and give them accurate information,” the deputy minister said.
Census 2022 started on 3 February and ends on 28 February 2022, Stats SA said.
