The South African prison authorities have delayed the release of Polish migrant and convicted murderer Janusz Walus after he sustained stab wounds during an attack by a prison mate, APA learnt on Friday.
Walus, who was stabbed on Tuesday, was expected to be released on Thursday on the orders of the Constitutional Court.
However, upon consultation between the prison authorities and Walus’ lawyers, it was agreed to release him at a later date to enable the authorities treat him of his wounds in a Pretoria prison, the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services said in a statement.
The apex court recently granted him parole after it found that the decision by Justice Minister Ronald Lamola not to release him on parole was “irrational and unconstitutional.”
The convict is serving a life sentence for killing South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani at his Johannesburg home in 1993.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said he had granted Walus permanent residence to enable him serve his parole.
