APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan jetted into Lilongwe on Wednesday at the start of a three-day state visit during which she will headline Malawi’s 59th independence celebrations scheduled for July 6.
Hassan was received at Kamuzu International Airport by President Lazarus Chakwera and senior Malawi government officials.
“The state visit will consolidate the already strong Malawi-Tanzania bilateral relations which are based on historical ties, mutual interest to promote the living standards of the people of the two countries, traditional people to-people exchanges, and a common interest in regional and global cooperation,” Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The Tanzanian leader was later on Wednesday expected to attend a prayer session to call for renewed unity among Malawians.
She would be a special guest during commemorations of Malawi’s 59th anniversary of independence on Thursday, before holding bilateral talks with and visiting some of the areas devastated by Tropical Cyclone Freddy that rocked Malawi in March.
