The Kingdom stands out as one of the few Mediterranean countries unaffected by terrorism. Its “zero” ranking on the new index reinforces its image as an oasis of peace in a context of instability.
Morocco stands out as one of the safest countries in the world, free from the effects of terrorism, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2024.
This annual ranking assesses the level of terrorist threat in 89 countries, and Morocco scores zero as do several countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Southern Africa.
Morocco stands out in a region often characterized by instability. Along with Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania, it is one of the few Mediterranean countries not affected by terrorism.
Other countries in the MENA region (North Africa and the Middle East),such as Mauritania, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, also score zero on the index.
The Global Terrorism Index uses various indicators to assess the terrorist threat, including the number of incidents, deaths, injuries and property damage per year.
Burkina Faso is the most dangerous country in the world, followed by Palestine. Algeria and Libya have a low terrorist threat, while Egypt has a medium threat. Iraq and Syria are the two Arab countries with the highest risks.
However, the definition of terrorism used in the report raises questions. The report does not make a clear distinction between the occupied Palestinian territories and the Israeli occupation. Thus, Israel is listed in the ranking as an area of high terrorist activity, referring to the besieged and occupied Palestinian territories that have been fighting the Israeli army for decades.
A good score on the index can significantly enhance a country’s reputation as a safe destination, attracting tourism and stimulating foreign investment.
For Morocco, the ranking reinforces its image as a haven of peace in a region often plagued by instability. Morocco’s regional context is complex.
Surrounded by countries with varying levels of terrorist threat, Morocco stands out for its relative stability. This situation is the result of a rigorous security policy and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
In the future, Morocco could continue to benefit from this reputation for security and attract more tourists and investors. However, it is essential to maintain and strengthen security measures in order to preserve this enviable position.
