Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has lauded the contributions of workers in Nigeria to the growth of the country.
Addressing Nigerian workers, who are celebrating the Workers Day in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu assured the workers that the reform agenda of his administration is geared towards the progress of Nigeria.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said that the Federal government was willing to receive the recommendations of the committee on the new national minimum wage and assured the workers that the reform agenda of the current administration was geared towards the progress of the country.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government says that although the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has yet to conclude its negotiations and that workers will not lose anything as the new minimum wage will take effect on May 1, 2024.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu, who made the pledge in his maiden May Day message dedicated to workers nationwide, promised better working conditions, fair wages for workers.
Tinubu pledged better living and working conditions for all Nigerians of working age, saying the “custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve a fair wage and enhanced welfare.”
Ngelale stated that the President affirmed that his administration remains committed to improving the welfare of all workers, noting the various relief programmes, including the wage award and the imminent minimum wage review.
“President Tinubu strongly believes that the custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve a fair wage and enhanced welfare and that a labourer is deserving of not just any reward but fair and commensurate wages.
“The President assures Nigerian workers of his dedication to not only improving their welfare but also enhancing their working conditions and providing the necessary tools for them to succeed,” the statement said.
In her address to the workers, the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, said that it was regrettable that the new national minimum wage was not ready before today and assured that a wide consultation was ongoing to ensure that the document was out as soon as possible.
