At least two people were killed and 13 others injured when part of a church collapsed on worshippers following a violent storm in Huye, a district in Southern Rwanda, officials said Saturday.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon when a brick wall under a makeshift roof collapsed but there was no service at time when the accident occurred, a senior local administrative official confirmed to APA.
Arsène Kabalisa, the Executive Secretary of Karama sector in Huye district explained that the accident was caused.apparenyly by the heavy rains which brought down the ceiling in Pentecostal Church.
“The roof of the church collapsed because of heavy rains Saturday… at this point we have a total of 2 fatalities,” he said.
Disaster management teams have been dispatched and investigations are currently underway into what caused the collapse.
However, early reports suggest that the roof collapsed under persistent heavy rains.
Meanwhile, all the injured were rushed to neighboring hospital where they are receiving medical care.
