The U.S. Embassy recently handed over new border security equipment worth $750,000.to Senegalese military authorities.
The handover ceremony for this state-of-the-art equipment, donated to Senegal by the United States and intended to strengthen the security of Senegal’s borders, was held last Tuesday at the Thies Regional
Tactical Training Center, west of Dakar.
The equipment, including night vision goggles, GPS devices, helmets, ballistic shields and vital medical equipment, was received by the national gendarmerie, according to a statement made available to APA on Friday.
Worth over $750,000 (about 450 million CFA francs), this equipment will provide important support to the units responsible for monitoring and securing the national borders.
“The United States is proud to support Senegal’s efforts to protect its borders by providing modern, high-quality equipment that will enhance the operational capabilities of the National Gendarmerie. Our ongoing partnership to strengthen border security reflects our ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of the Senegalese people,” said Ambassador Michael Raynor.
The diplomat also explained that the equipment delivery is part of a four-year programme through which his country is working with Senegalese security forces to improve their ability to identify and respond to threats, strengthen border security, and combat illicit trafficking, whether in narcotics, weapons, or people.
“Through joint training and resource-sharing initiatives, our collaboration strengthens national and regional security and underscores the deep and growing security partnership between the United States and Senegal,” he added.
