In a recent address to the Security Council, UN Special Envoy Bintou Keita highlighted the progress made in recent months, including a ceasefire between DRC and Rwanda and increased dialogue between the two countries. While acknowledging the persistence of violence, Ms. Keita expressed hope for a peaceful resolution.
The UN official also emphasized the need for continued humanitarian assistance to address the dire situation facing millions of displaced people in the region. She called on the international community to provide adequate funding to support the most vulnerable populations.
The neutralisation of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a notorious rebel group operating in eastern DRC, remains a priority for the UN. The group’s attacks have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including a record 272 deaths in June 2024.
In addition to the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis, the DRC is also grappling with other challenges, such as the displacement of millions of people and the spread of diseases like mpox. The UN remains committed to protecting civilians and supporting the government’s efforts to address these issues.
