The Sudanese civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has had a devastating impact on the country, forcing over 12 million people to flee their homes. The humanitarian crisis has reached alarming levels, prompting urgent calls for a cessation of hostilities.
During his recent visit to Sudan and Ethiopia, Mr. Lamamra emphasized the need for “extraordinary collective pressure” from all relevant actors, including regional and international powers, to compel the warring parties to engage in meaningful dialogue. He stressed that “there can be no military solution” to this conflict and urged all parties to prioritize the suffering of the Sudanese people.
While acknowledging the challenges, Mr. Lamamra emphasized the importance of engaging with a broad spectrum of Sudanese society, including civil society organizations, women, youth, and marginalized groups. He noted that these voices are crucial in finding a lasting and inclusive solution to the conflict.
Despite not witnessing any immediate breakthroughs, Mr. Lamamra remains hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached. He called on all parties to prioritize the interests of the Sudanese people and to work towards a credible and inclusive political process that can bring an end to the bloodshed and pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous future for Sudan.
