Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, the UN Special Envoy for Libya, has emphasized the critical need for all parties to collaborate and develop a shared vision to resolve the ongoing political deadlock and pave the way for free and fair elections.
Libya remains entrenched in political instability following the postponement of elections originally scheduled for December 2021. The country is currently divided, with two rival governments—one in Tripoli and the other in Benghazi—further complicating the path to a democratic transition.
Tetteh’s call for unity came after a meeting with Moussa Al-Koni, a member of the Presidential Council. The two discussed the latest political developments, including national reconciliation efforts.
Al-Koni reiterated his support for the UN’s efforts to stabilize Libya and ensure the realization of electoral rights. “There will be no stability in Libya until free and fair elections, the results of which are accepted by all parties, are held,” he stated.
The indefinitely postponed 2021 presidential and legislative elections continue to prolong the country’s political crisis.
