The US Health and Human Services, Secretary, Alex Azar has hailed Uganda for its efforts in the prevention of Ebola outbreak in the democratic Republic of Congo.
While meeting the Uganda ministry of Health officials Alex Azar, thanked the Uganda government for its hard work in preparedness to infectious outbreaks and putting in place screening facilities at the Congo –Uganda border to prevent Ebola.
“I recognise the incredible hard work that Uganda has done to prevent the spread of Ebola. Uganda, Ministry of Health and Minister Aceng have risen to the occasion making the country stand out in outbreak preparedness and response in the continent” Secretary Azar said.
Azar who also made a stopover at the Democratic Republic of Congo said the security situation in Congo is not yet stable but noted that the current regime of the president of Congo Felix Tshisekedi and the dedicated peace keeping forces, are working hard to reduce attacks on health workers in DRC.
He promised his continuous support in the fight against ebola, HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
Meanwhile, the minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng thanked the US government for its great partnership and support in the reduction of HIV/AIDS infections.
Aceng said the HIV infections are now at fifty three thousand from one hundred and twenty five thousand HIV infections in 2010.
The Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said “I wish to appreciate Secretary Azar who has been a great support not only to Uganda but to the entire continent. He has been with me throughout, giving full support to ensure #Uganda is protected from ebola”
Secretary Azar is on a week-long regional visit to assess DRC, Rwanda and Uganda efforts to end the deadly DRC ebola outbreak.
