The 11th edition of the Raid Sahraouiya, a challenging multi-day cycling race through the Sahara Desert, kicked off on February 2nd, bringing together nearly 40 women from Gabon, Cameroon, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and other countries.
More than just a sporting event, the Raid Sahraouiya celebrates solidarity and female empowerment amidst the breathtaking dunes of the Sahara.
After a long journey to the bivouac, the participants arrived late at night, their excitement palpable despite their fatigue. As dawn broke, the adventurers prepared for the first stage, a demanding 12.5-kilometer course through the dunes.
The race organizers emphasized safety and accessibility, ensuring well-marked trails, strategically placed checkpoints, regular refreshments, and a dedicated medical team. Moroccan authorities also played a vital role in ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of the event.
Leila Ouachi, president of the Lagon Dakhla association and co-organizer of the event, highlighted the deeper meaning of the Raid Sahraouiya. “It’s an invitation to surpass yourself, to push your limits, but above all to promote solidarity,” she stated.
The first stage presented a challenging test of endurance, with participants navigating the demanding desert terrain. While some teams excelled, the true spirit of the Raid Sahraouiya lies in the shared experience, the camaraderie, and the collective effort to overcome the challenges of the desert.
The Raid Sahraouiya, held under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, will continue until February 8th. The participants can expect a week filled with exhilarating challenges, moments of shared joy, and a profound appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the Sahara Desert.
