A cholera outbreak has been reported at Mazowe Flowers Farm in Mashonaland Central province, near Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, state media reported on Friday.
According to The Herald daily, the outbreak has resulted in one death and 60 confirmed cases.
The outbreak began on December 21 last year at the Mazowe Flowers farm compound, which relies on a single borehole with no reservoir tank, connecting only to one tap.
The compound also has limited sanitation facilities. Additionally, the Glendale Highway suburb has been affected, where overflowing sewage contaminated shallow wells.
In response, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has established oral rehydration centres in both locations and is conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns focused on health and hygiene. They are also monitoring gatherings and food vendors.
Provincial health promotion officer Takura Mzorodzi urged councils and responsible authorities to ensure the provision of safe water to communities.
He emphasized the importance of regular refuse collection and the maintenance of sewer systems to prevent cholera, especially after it was discovered that overflowing sewage was contaminating water sources.
