Zimbabwe is considering making it mandatory for people to have COVID-19 vaccination cards before boarding public transport as part of measures to contain the spread of the virus, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said on Tuesday night.
Addressing journalists following this week’s cabinet meeting, Mutsvangwa said the proposed measure would see only those vaccinated against COVID-19 being allowed to use public transport.
“Please note that there will be a time when people will not be allowed to board public transport without a valid vaccination card,” Mutsvangwa said.
She said the government was considering establishing vaccination points at bus termini across the country to make it easy for unvaccinated passengers to get their jabs.
Already Zimbabweans wishing to drink in bars or eat at restaurants are now required to produce vaccination cards under regulations contained in Statutory Instrument 267 which was gazette last week.
The measures comes as the southern African country is in the throes of a fourth wave of COVID-19 that has seen a spike in new infections.
