The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) on Thursday refuted allegations that it sent an excessively large delegation to the ongoing Paris Olympics that included more officials than athletes.
Social media has been abuzz with reports since Wednesday that Zimbabwe’s delegation comprised seven athletes and 67 officials.
ZOC chief executive Marlene Gadzirayi said contrary to the allegations, Zimbabwe’s official delegation comprised seven athletes and 10 officials, mostly coaches and trainers for the sportspersons.
The southern African country is represented by Isaac Mpofu (marathon), Rutendo Nyahora (marathon), Makanakaishe Charamba (200m sprint) , Tapiwa Makarawu (200m sprint), Stephen Cox (rowing), Dennis Cyprianos (swimming) and Paige van der Weisthuizen (swimming).
ZOC chairperson Thabani Gonye emphasised that the officials were essential for supporting the athletes and ensuring their optimal performance.
