A horrific head-on collision between an inter-city bus and a haulage truck along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway on Thursday claimed the lives of at least 24 people and left dozens more injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the accident, which occurred at the 262-kilometre mark near Lutumba tollgate around 8 am local time (0600 GMT).
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the bus, which was carrying 65 passengers, was involved in the collision with a truck carrying four occupants.
“The number of the injured is yet to be established,” Nyathi said in a statement.
According to Nyathi, the bus, traveling from the capital Harare to Beitbridge, was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the oncoming truck.
Eyewitnesses said the bus driver was allegedly speeding.
Reports suggest 17 fatalities occurred at the scene of the accident, with seven more dying at Beitbridge District Hospital.
