Ethiopia has celebrated the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, marking the historic defeat of Italian colonial forces by Ethiopian troops in 1896.
The anniversary was held on Monday at the Adwa Victory Memorial and Emperor Menelik II Square with the laying of wreaths at the foot of Emperor Menelik II statue and other different activities.
Speaking at the event, Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula emphasized the historical significance of the victory, highlighting the role of unity and bravery in overcoming colonial forces and protecting Ethiopia’s sovereignty.
“The Victory of Adwa is a profound story of struggle, reflecting the broader fight of black peoples against oppression,” he said.
The triumph safeguarded Ethiopia’s sovereignty and sent a resounding message of resistance against colonialism across the African continent.
The battle remains one of the most significant events in African and global history, marking a turning point in international perceptions of sovereignty and political independence.
The Battle of Adwa resulted in the defeat of Italian forces that sought to impose colonial control over Ethiopia and guaranteed Ethiopia’s sovereignty at a time when much of the African continent was under colonial rule.
The Ethiopian campaign was led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, whose strategic coordination and political leadership unified diverse forces in defense of the country from invading forces.
Since then, the victory of Adwa has stood as a symbol of national pride, courage, and the unyielding spirit of independence, inspiring generations both within Ethiopia and across the African Diaspora.
Jula recalled the extraordinary fighting at the battle of Adwa where Ethiopian warriors, equipped largely with traditional weapons, confronted an enemy armed with advanced artillery.
“The memory of Adwa victory serves as a guiding light,” he concluded, “ensuring that the spirit of resilience continues to thrive across generations.”
The 130th Adwa Victory Day is celebrated under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon” on March 2, 2026.
