APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – These funds should facilitate access to drinking water and sanitation for beneficiaries in semi-urban and rural areas.
In a statement seen by APA on Wednesday, the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group announced that it has approved a grant of 34.27 million euros to Chad for the implementation of the second phase of the semi-urban and rural water supply and sanitation program in eleven regions of the country.
The program provides for the construction of drinking water supply infrastructure, including 23 boreholes for the supply of drinking water to Amdjarass and the surrounding area, 25 submersible pumps for the Amdjarass boreholes, 225 boreholes equipped with hand pumps, 50 water production units, and 54 solar or thermal mini-water supply systems.
In the area of sanitation, the program will construct 500 three-stall flushable latrines with hand-washing facilities in schools, medical centers, bus stations, and markets, as well as 20 garbage bins. Four final solid waste disposal sites will be constructed, as well as seven large-diameter agricultural boreholes and seven small irrigation gardens for women’s groups.
The intervention area for Phase 2 of the program includes the provinces of Ennedi Est (Amdjarass town and surroundings), Mandoul, Moyen Chari, Mayo Kebbi Est, Mayo Kebbi Ouest, Salamat and Sila. These provinces were selected based on their needs, which are characterised by low access to drinking water (between 13% and 42%) and sanitation, and a high incidence of waterborne diseases.
“By investing in the construction of social and rural infrastructure in areas affected by fragility, the program will contribute to building resilient societies, reducing isolation and inequalities between women and men, promoting inclusive economic development, and improving access to basic health services,” said Mamadi Souaré, Acting Country Director for AfDB in Chad, as quoted in the statement.
The financial support will come from Pillar I resources of the Transition Support Fund. The project aims to improve living conditions in semi-urban and rural areas by providing access to drinking water and sanitation.
