The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Sunday said al-Shabaab militants fired several mortars into its base in the capital Mogadishu.
According to the statement issued by AUSSOM, the attack caused no casualties or damage to property and the situation has since been contained.
“AUSSOM reiterates that such attacks will not undermine its commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in fighting terrorism and in the pursuit for lasting peace and security for the country” the statement said.
The attack comes just weeks after a roadside bomb blast narrowly missed the convoy of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with al-Shabaab claiming responsibility.
The militant still retain a capability to target Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia despite a surge in the bombing of their positions by the US anti-terrorism unit helping the AU peacekeepers and the Somali government forces.
The Somali government, in collaboration with the African Union (AU), recently approved the deployment of 9,530 foreign troops as part of the newly established AUSSOM peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
This move followed a recent report from the United Nations Security Council and marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to stabilise Somalia amidst persistent security challenges.
The AUSSOM mission will see the arrival of personnel from five African countries, including 2,500 Ethiopian soldiers, 1,100 Egyptian troops, 4,500 Ugandans, 1,520 Djiboutian, and 1,410 Kenyans.
