Mozambique’s main opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has announced the formation of a new political party, Anamalala, which he claims will rid the country of the “cycle of injustice and abuse of power”.
Announcing the formation of the new party on Facebook on Sunday, Mondlane said the name – an acronym for the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique – also carries symbolic weight in the Makua language, meaning “it’s over” or “it’s going to finish.”
“What is finishing is the cycle of injustice, exclusion and abuse of power. What is being born is the promise of a new Mozambique,” Mondlane declared.
Mondlane, who has faced clashes with authorities since rejecting the election results as fraudulent, said he submitted Anamalala’s registration documents to the Ministry of Justice on April 3.
The ministry has 60 days to decide on the application.
He described the party as a movement for change, promising a “new, autonomous and plural Mozambique” that empowers marginalized communities.
Anamalala was a rallying cry during protests Mondlane led against the ruling Frelimo Party, which he accuses of perpetuating injustice and exclusion.
