The Gambia and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) have signed an agreement for an additional $10 million in financing for a project to develop 50 kilometres of roads in the Greater Banjul Area, thereby strengthening cooperation between Banjul and Riyadh in the area of infrastructure.
The agreement was signed during the visit to The Gambia, from August 30 to September
1, 2026, by SFD President Sultan Ben Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, a special guest of Gambian President Adama Barrow.
The Saudi delegation was received by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Seedy K. M. Keita, with whom it discussed prospects for strengthening cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the financing of infrastructure projects.
The additional $10 million in funding reinforces the SFD’s support for the Greater Banjul Road Project, considered a major investment for improving mobility in The Gambia’s largest metropolitan area.
Through this support, the Gambian authorities aim to accelerate the development and modernization of the road network, improve traffic conditions, and foster economic activity in the Banjul region and its surrounding areas.
Beyond the road project, talks focused on other priority sectors and new financing opportunities that could support The Gambia’s development programs.
Sultan Ben Abdulrahman Al-Marshad was accompanied by the SFD’s Director General for Africa, Mohammad Ben Adhan Al-Shammari, and the Director of the Protocol Department, Faisal Ben Sulaiman Al-Khoushiban.
For the Gambian government, this new agreement demonstrates its commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with financial institutions and international partners in order to mobilise more resources for infrastructure.
Cooperation with the Saudi Fund for Development is thus part of Banjul’s strategy to improve transportation infrastructure, support economic growth, and enhance living conditions for the population.
