Burkina Faso will deploy 30 billion CFA francs over the next five years to finance its national artificial intelligence (AI) development roadmap, targeting the training of 500 AI experts and the creation of 5,000 specialized digital jobs by 2030.
The strategic 2026–2030 framework was presented on October 23, 2026, by Yaya Traoré, Permanent Secretary in charge of Innovation and Emerging Digital Technologies Monitoring, during the second edition of the Le Faso Digital conference in Ouagadougou.
Formally approved by state authorities on June 19, 2026, after ten months of drafting, the roadmap outlines the deployment of 23 pilot AI applications across essential sectors, including healthcare diagnostics, education, precision agriculture, security operations, and public governance. Specific technological projects include hate speech and deepfake video detection systems, public procurement audit tools, and localized natural language processing models focused initially on Mooré, Dioula, and Fulfulde. To ensure digital sovereignty, the plan commits to expanding domestic data hosting and processing infrastructure, aiming to retain at least 80% of all program-generated data on secure servers within Burkina Faso.
