Ethiopia’s government soldiers have been accused of executing ten farmers in North Mecha, Gojjam area of Amhara region, APA can report on Tuesday.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that the extrajudicial executions occurred on Monday, two days after surgeon Dr. Andualem Dange, who has been practicing at Tibebe Ghion Specialised Hospital in Bahir Dar, capital of the Amhara region was gunned down.
Several witnesses told APA that Dange was heading home from work when he was forced out of a car and shot in point blank range in the Koshe locality of the city.
They also said the farmers were taken out of their homes and killed close to the regional capital, Bahir Dar.
The recurring executions of civilians has been happening in the Amhara region where fighting continues between government troops and armed combatants also known as Fano forces.
Some say usually the killings occur right after the government forces engage Fano forces in skirmishes.
The Fano forces enjoy massive grassroots’ support in the region.
Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and other rights organisations have reported recurring extrajudicial executions in many areas of Amhara since government troops were deployed in August 2023 with the stated objective of disarming Fano fighters.
