Maritime traffic between the Spanish port of Tarifa and Tangier, Morocco, faced fresh disruptions on Thursday due to adverse weather conditions affecting the Strait of Gibraltar, according to the port authorities of the Bay of Algeciras.
The interruptions to maritime links between Tangier and Tarifa in Spain highlight the vulnerability of this strategic sea corridor between Spain and Morocco, which is particularly susceptible to unpredictable weather patterns.
The Strait of Gibraltar, a vital gateway between Europe and Africa, remains exposed to extreme conditions that can impede the smooth flow of exchanges, especially during periods of significant meteorological instability.
As a result, all departures from Tarifa were canceled on Thursday, with the exception of the 8:00 p.m. crossing, which remained subject to weather developments, the port authorities specified.
Meanwhile, crossings between Algeciras and Tangier Med are experiencing delays, although no cancellations have been reported so far.
Spain’s meteorological agency (Aemet) issued a yellow alert, effective until noon, for the Strait of Gibraltar and several areas of Cadiz province.
Rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter is expected in some locations, while powerful waves are forecast along the strait’s coastline.
Southwesterly gusts could reach speeds of 80 km/h, with swells estimated at four meters, according to Aemet’s predictions.
