Benin has bolstered its anti-terrorism efforts with the acquisition of a Cessna 208 B surveillance aircraft, provided through cooperation with the European Union.
This aircraft will significantly enhance the Beninese Armed Forces’ ability to monitor and respond to jihadist threats in the country’s northern regions.
On March 6th, Benin’s Minister of National Defense, Fortunet Alain Nouatin, officially received the Cessna 208 B, emphasizing its strategic importance in addressing the growing security challenges faced by Benin and the wider sub-region.
The reconnaissance plane will play a crucial role in deterring terrorist activities along Benin’s borders and protecting deployed forces, according to the government.
This acquisition is part of a broader security partnership between Benin and the European Union. EU Ambassador to Benin, Stephane Mund, highlighted the aircraft’s role in enabling the Beninese Armed Forces to effectively monitor the northern regions and improve situational awareness in the fight against terrorism.
Ambassador Mund reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting West African nations facing complex security threats, noting that numerous training sessions have already been conducted for Benin’s defense and security forces under the EU’s Security and Defense Initiative.
Minister Nouatin reaffirmed Benin’s commitment to collaborating with the European Union to promote peace, security, and sustainable development in the region.
This new asset strengthens Benin’s counterterrorism strategy and enhances its military capabilities in response to recurring jihadist attacks by groups such as the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI).
