The Botswana government has warned that the country will continue to experience heavy rains until at least the end of February, raising concerns over further flooding in already affected areas.
In a statement, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment cautioned that persistent downpours are expected to continue to cause widespread water accumulation and flash flooding across the country.
“The current rainfall situation is expected to persist throughout this week and possibly up to the end of next week (28th February 2025), potentially worsening the situation in already affected areas,” ministry permanent secretary Boatametse Modukanele said.
He warned that rainfall amounts of 50mm or more in a 24-hour period are likely to be recorded in many parts of the country, exacerbating an already dire situation.
The warning comes after days of relentless rainfall that has left large parts of the country inundated.
The capital Gaborone has been among the hardest-hit areas, with roads submerged, shopping centres damaged and residential neighbourhoods flooded.
Authorities have reported significant disruptions to transportation networks as major roads remain impassable due to standing water.
Residents in low-lying areas have been particularly affected, with some forced to evacuate their homes.
Local authorities and residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to take necessary precautions, including relocating people to higher ground and avoiding unnecessary travel.
