Sudan’s military leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has claimed victory over the Rapid Support Force after government troops reclaimed the capital Khartoum.
It comes shortly after he declared the main airport liberated from the paramilitary group who have been fighting the Sudan National Army for control of the country since April 2023.
“Khartoum has been freed from enemy control” Burhan declared while surrounded by his soldiers who cheered with guns held aloft.
It comes days after the presidential palace was also recaptured from the RSF who still control large swathes of Darfur.
There were jubilant scenes in the Sudanese capital on Wednesday as Burhan toured the presidential palace after landing at Khartoum airport, which had been recaptured by the army hours earlier.
The capture of the palace signed a shift in the balance of power in the Sudanese capital which until recently was in the hands of the RSF.
It is seen as a major coup for the SNA the morale of whose soldiers had risen with each major battlefield breakthrough.
According to sources in the Sudanese army, soldiers are combing Khartoum for remaining pockets of RSF fighters many of whom have retreated to the south near Jebel Awliya, their only exit route from the area.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed and close to three millions have been driven from their homes by almost two years of fighting over disagreements between Burhan and a rival general of the RSF Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The two former allies who staged a successful coup, have been locked in an apparent power struggle since April 2023.
Months ago, it was generally held that the civil war belligerents led by the two feuding generals had fought themselves to a stalemate.
However, with the territorial gains made by the Sudanese national army against the RSF in recent weeks, there are indications that the tide of the conflict might be turning albeit slowly.
